The Dalai Lama has apologised after a video emerged of him kissing a young boy on the lips and asking him to “suck my tongue”.
The spiritual leader’s office said in a statement published by his office on Monday that he “regrets the incident” and offered his apologies to the boy and his family.
“A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug,” the statement read.
“His Holiness wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused,”
“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident”.
Born Tenzin Gyatso, the 87-year-old buddhist priest has been living in India since 1959 following the annexation of Tibet by China.
The Dalai Lama has faced controversies before. As far back as 2019 he suggested that if the Dalai Lama returned as a woman “she should be more attractive” which caused an outcry, which his office apologised for then too.
