The Met Police officer cleared of murdering Chris Kaba is set to be promoted to the rank of inspector.

Armed police officer Martyn Blake, who awaits a decision by the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) over whether to pursue a gross misconduct case against him, had completed the necessary exams and training for promotion to inspector prior to the Kaba incident.

Having been cleared of murder, the Met Police has said Sgt Blake can proceed with his promotion, a move that one former chief said was ‘absolutely proper’ and shows that the force is behind him.

Following the unanimous not guilty verdict nearly a month ago Met commissioner Mark Rowley called the system “broken”, with the decision to go to trial angering the police leading them to lobby ministers to make it harder for such a trial to happen again.

Kaba’s family said they were “devastated” by the verdict in the face of “unimaginable grief”, with his supporters saying it gave police “impunity” to kill.
