The City of Minneapolis agreed on Friday to pay $27 million to the family of George Floyd, to settle the civil suit over his death in police custody.
Officer Derek Chauvin is set to go on trial this month for charges including second-degree murder with the jury for the case being currently being selected.
The payout represents one of the largest of its kind with the settlement being announced by lawyers and city officials on Friday March 12.
The family’s lawyer Ben Crump described Mr Flyod’s death on 25 May last year as a “watershed moment for America” and the civil ruling as “historic and significant”.
“The family of George Floyd and I are very grateful to Mayor Fry and the city council for not just saying you care about George Floyd, but showing that you care about George Floyd.”
