Earth To Get A New ‘Mini Moon’ This Month, Scientists Reveal
25 Sep 2024
Earth is about to gain a new “mini-moon,” this month, as scientists have revealed the newly discovered asteroid, named 2024 PT5, will only be captured by Earth’s gravity and orbit our world.
The mini-moon which is only the size of a bus is scheduled to arrive on September 29 and leave on November 25, according to astronomers. Then, the space rock will return to a heliocentric orbit, which is an orbit around the sun.
The asteroid belongs to the Arjuna asteroid belt, a group of space rocks in the solar system that revolve around the Sun.
Travelling at approximately 2,200 mph, the asteroid’s relatively low velocity makes it susceptible to Earth’s gravitational pull, allowing it to become a temporary satellite.
Although only hear for a short time, Earth will not see the last of this mini-moon as scientists predict it will re-enter our orbit in 2055.
