1 Jul 2022
Amazon are here to stay in the world of football broadcasting after signing a deal to show the Champions League in the United Kingdom.
The Athletic claim UEFA have ditched their exclusivity model, striking a deal that will allow Amazon and BT to show a number of Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League games during the 2024-27 cycle.
BT Sport have exclusive rights to Europe’s top competition in the UK – having beaten rivals Sky Sports in 2015 with a £1.2bn bid that runs until the end of the 2023/24 season.
Amazon’s entrance into the market will mean BT’s rights will be diluted from 2024-25 onward as the e-commerce platform will show matches on its Amazon Prime Video streaming service.
Highlights of the Champions League will also be returning to terrestrial TV for the first time in nearly a decade being shown on the BBC from 2024 onwards.
