British-Nigerian singer-songwriter Gabzy returns this week with Round 1, a two-track EP that takes listeners on an immersive journey through dual facets of his musical identity. This unique project reintroduces us to Gabzy and his alter ego, Malone, each channeling contrasting moods and experiences. With Round 1, Gabzy showcases his versatility, pairing high-energy confidence with introspective soulfulness. This duality allows fans to experience both the bold, self-assured side of his artistry and a softer, more vulnerable dimension, a balance that underscores Gabzy’s dynamic place in the UK’s R&B, Alté, and Afro music scenes.

On the opening track, “Don’t Play with Me,” produced by Puffy, Gabzy taps into Malone’s fearless, unapologetic energy. The song captures themes of self-worth, luxury, and confidence, embracing a mindset of boundless ambition and success. With infectious beats and an assertive tone, “Don’t Play with Me” is an anthem for those unafraid to flaunt their achievements, blending a feel-good vibe with an empowered message. This Malone persona, fierce and full of swagger, contrasts with the more introspective side Gabzy presents in the second track, highlighting his ability to connect with audiences in both high-energy and reflective spaces.

The second track, “Summer Nights,” showcases Gabzy’s softer side as he delves into themes of longing and nostalgia. Reuniting with longtime collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Melvitto, Gabzy delivers a soulful narrative of a past relationship, blending neon-lit beats with haunting vocals that evoke the struggle of moving on. This track’s emotional depth reveals a vulnerability that contrasts with Malone’s bravado, creating a powerful, multifaceted portrait of the artist. With both tracks on Round 1, Gabzy continues to solidify his standing as a leading voice in the UK’s vibrant and evolving R&B and Alté scenes.
