My colleague near the beginning of the year requested for some artwork to be designed for an artist he felt would be a game changer. This member of the MM team had spent this whole decade working with emerging artists but he was fully gassed about this particular young man. Yet when he sent the artists name in the WhatsApp group, I looked at my phone thinking, “did E just say the yute’s called Abra Cadabra, he needs to put the weed down. Like who is the track featuring Alacazam, David Blaine and Paul Daniel’s?” Jokes aside, my colleague told me that Abra’s work rate was second to none, he was a studio fiend, who relished over standing his discipline, whilst puffing the ounto.
As soon the artwork was designed and popped up on various North London social media profiles, something mythical was happening as the audio submission of a track called “Robbery” was sent us and uploaded on the 29th of January but even at that stage no one had any idea how massive this tune would be but him and his team kept pushing it to the masses. A month later we had an event called “Digital, Tech and Music”, which Abra along with various emerging artists came along to learn how they could get a foothold in not only music but life in general.
A month later E took him to Bl@ckbox and introduced him to Lotes (legend in the game), where he performed the extended arguably the best freestyle of 2016, along with an extended version of Robbery, which illustrated his ability as rapper with dynamic 9 minute freestyle that takes the listener through various emotions.
The bangers keep coming as he keeps the streets warm with bangers such as 4/20, Man Down Pt 2 and The Roads (my 2nd favourite Abz track). This includes shelling down Radar with DJ Kenny Allstar. Many emerging artists ask, “how do I get an MAB”, as Abra illustrated, you have to put in work, no short cuts. So 6 months after Robbery initially dropped, he dropped an epic Mad About Bars, the second half “Remember Me”, is one of the most reflective and painful pieces of lyricism you will hear this year.
Following month July, his team then put on their creative hats and turn Robbery into a mini movie, which is one of the hardest videos you will see come out of the UK in 2016:
This mini movie had the scene paying attention and 2 weeks later a remix is recorded and video is shoot, with arguably the UKs most successful and lyrically gifted duo; Krept and Konan:
A month later he pops over to Radar to shell down a Jade Avia Hungover Session, then the following month in September, the Robbery Remix picks up a Rated Award.
