DATE: Friday 25th May 2012

TIME: 7pm – 11pm

ENTRY: £8 on the door

VENUE: Yum Cha @ Silk & Spice, 27-28 North Farm Road, London, NW1 8AG

An event with a difference, Chronicles of a Griot is a spoken word, poetry and live music event which will be taking place on Friday 25th May at the Yum Cha bar in Camden’s Silk & Spice restaurant. Sounds posh, doesn’t it?! It will certainly be an event with a difference, if the acts are anything to go by…

Headlining acts include rapper Roosta and renowned poet and performer Suli Breaks.

Alongside the headliners, rap duo Younited Kings are ones to watch at this event. Hailing from south London on a chilled out vibe, talented MCs Mordan Words and Cornerstone are all about telling a story through the medium of music. They’ve been featured on RD.TV and recently released their EP Collective Identity, which can be downloaded for free here.

With each track off Collective Identity reminiscent of traditional old skool hip-hop, Younited Kings are a breath of fresh air that I will happily welcome to the UK urban scene with open arms. The Kings use laid back, minimal hip-hop beats instead of gimmicky American sounding arrangements, and their lyrics are intelligent, relating to a range of issues and topics.

I can’t wait for Chronicles of a Griot – an event review will follow but in the meantime get acquainted with the act I’m looking forward to the most…
